Students apply online at http://graduatestudies.byu.edu/?q=content/application-instructions.
Applicants must have a BS degree in mechanical engineering for regular admission or a BS in an allied field (other engineering, physical, and mathematical science programs), requiring provisional admission. Applicants with a BS in an allied discipline must take undergraduate courses as outlined in the Policies & Procedures section of the student handbook (See Policy 1). A GPA of 3.0/4.0 or above in the last 60 hours of upper division coursework is required of all applicants. In addition to the application, and other documents outlined in the application process, all applicants must complete the Statement of Intent. MS students should express their interest to do research and a thesis.
All applicants must submit scores to the NEW GRE exam. Average scores for admitted MS applicants in recent years can be viewed in the catalog. (select MS or PhD, then Statistics). Students with lower scores may want to consider retaking the GRE exam. Only the higher scores will be taken into account.
All international applicants must also take the TOEFL or IELTS and satisfy the minimum university score requirement for admission. Please refer to the Graduate Studies webpage for more information regarding this and other requirements for international students.
Scores for the entrance exams must be sent directly to Brigham Young University from the testing service centers. Applicants should take the GRE exam and the TOEFL or IELTS exams 4-6 weeks prior to the application deadline.
Deadlines for application are January 15th for fall admittance and September 15th for winter admittance. Students who apply for fall semester may attend earlier for spring or summer term upon departmental approval, after acceptance into the graduate program. However, enrollment cannot be delayed until the following winter semester.
As part of the application process students should identify a research advisor by contacting faculty members in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Faculty profiles and contact information are available in the faculty directory.
