Capstone Safety Training

  • Capstone teams will receive a team swipe card permission form at the beginning of the Fall semester. ALL team members follow the instructions to complete the required Y-Train modules and final hands-on training with Dave Laws or Kevin Cole. Swipe card access can then be processed for each team member.
  • For other individuals NOT on a Capstone Team: please complete the online training above, then get the Swipe Card Permission Slip (from CTB 435) signed by Dave Laws or Kevin Cole (who will verify need for access and go over any applicable hands-on training).
  • Card activation usually takes 1-2 days.

A hands-on tutorial is on the desktop of the computer attached to the Laser cutter. If you have additional training questions please contact the Checkout Room personnel.

To get access to B34 (south door): present proof of completion of Machine Safety Training above to secretaries in CTB 435 to get your ID card activated (usually takes 1-2 days).

3D Printers

Description of Machines

The purpose of these machines is to allow students the opportunity to learn how to use a 3D printer. Unlike other 3D printing services on campus, you will be expected to learn how to use the machine yourself and find out how you can get a good finished product on your own. Links to training and other resources are provided below and can be found on the desktop of their respective computers. In general, the Form2 printers are easier to set up and give you higher quality parts, but the cost of the part is much more expensive than with the Airwolf and Rigidbot printers.

ShopBot CNC Router (B34)

Description of Machine

  • 3-Axis CNC Router - can cut wood, plastic and foam in 2D or 3D
  • Accepts .DXF (2D) and .STL (3D) CAD files
  • Table Size: 8' x 4'

After completing the online building training go to Dave Laws or Kevin Cole for final hands on training. After completion you will receive a signed form that you can take to CTB 435 for card activation (usually takes 1-2 days).

Before the first time you use the Shopbot, review the training materials and then schedule Kevin Cole or one of his TA's when you are ready to cut (see Project Support above). The person scheduled will answer questions and check setup to ensure that no damage is done to you, the machine, or your part. Please plan to bring someone with you as you are required to have two people present whenever machine tools are used.
