Students apply online at http://www.byu.edu/gradstudies/admissions/applynow.php.
Applicants must have a BS in Mechanical Engineering or in an allied discipline, with at least a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 semester hours. Applicants with a BS in an allied discipline will be admitted provisionally and must take undergraduate courses as outlined in the Policies & Procedures section of the student handbook (See Policy 1). In addition to the application, and other documents outlined in the application process, all applicants must complete the Statement of Intent. MS students should express their interest to do research and a thesis. A non-thesis MS is offered under certain circumstances; however, funding is generally not available for the non-thesis option. In order to pursue this option approval should be obtained from the department prior to applying. Students must indicate such approval in their Statement of Intent.
All applicants must submit GRE scores. Average scores for recent years are: V-537; Q-742; W-4.4. Students with scores below these numbers must show aptitude in other areas to be admitted.
All international applicants must also take the TOEFL or IELTS and satisfy the minimum university score requirement for admission. Please refer to the Graduate Studies webpage for more information regarding this and other requirements for international students.
Scores for the entrance exams must be sent directly to Brigham Young University from the testing service centers. Applicants should take the GRE exam and the TOEFL or IELTS exams 4-6 weeks prior to the application deadline.
Deadlines for application are January 15th for fall admittance and September 15th for winter admittance. Students who apply for fall semester may attend earlier for spring or summer term upon departmental approval, after acceptance into the graduate program. However, enrollment cannot be delayed until the following winter semester.
As part of the application process students should find an Advisor by contacting faculty members in the Mechanical Engineering Department. Their profiles and contact information are available in the faculty directory.
