Research Interests

Dr. Mattson's primary area of interest is engineering design theory and methodology, with a particular emphasis on multiobjective/multidisciplinary optimization and decision-making at the conceptual and preliminary design stages. He is specifically interested in developing formal design methodologies that (i) integrate various discipline-specific models and analyses under a single non-deterministic optimization framework, (ii) capitalize on the immense power of computational optimization early in the design process – before design freedoms have been significantly reduced, and (iii) are pragmatic and easy for practicing engineers to use.

Applications range from multiscale design to engineering based poverty alleviation to systems design methods. Other areas of interest include uncertainty modeling, surrogate modeling, product family design, modular product design, and multinational engineering design.

Teaching Interests

Dr. Mattson's teaching interests are in team-based engineering design and product development. He has taught various engineering design classes. Some involving sponsored projects, global travel and interaction with global companies, and others involving students from diverse disciplines from around the campus.
