BYU Mechanical Engineering professor Scott Thomson was recently awarded a five year, $1.8 million research grant from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Thomson’s project will investigate the influence of subglottic anatomy on voice production. The grant has subcontracts through BYU to the University of Utah, the National Center for Voice and Speech, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “Vocal fold vibration is caused by a three-way coupling between laryngeal aerodynamics, acoustics, and tissue dynamics,” Dr. Thomson commented. “Research focused on the glottic and supraglottic…

Dr. Christopher A. Mattson was recently awarded the Jack Spergel Memorial Award for Outstanding Technical Paper at the International Wire and Cable Symposium Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. The paper, entitled “Recent Developments in the Design and Optimization of Constant Force Electrical Contacts,” was selected as the outstanding technical paper of the 2008 IWCS Conference. The paper was written with students John Meaders and Stephen Harston. Meaders graduated from BYU in August 2008, and is now employed by Spirit Aerospace. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) announced the winners of the 2008-2009 AIAA Foundation Undergraduate Team Engine Design Competition. A team from BYU’s Mechanical Engineering department won third prize for their design. The competition required the development of a variable cycle engine for subsonic transport applications. BYU Mechanical Engineering senior Oliver Johnson won second place at a competition sponsored by the Department of Energy for its interns at the national labs. The Science and Engineering Research Challenge (SERCh) was held at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, November 8-9, 2009. The competition included 100 students from top schools across the nation, and Johnson represented BYU by bringing home a second place trophy and $1500. Several members of BYU’s Chapter of Engineers without Borders recently returned from a humanitarian service trip to Peru. The team of students represented several departments in the Fulton College of Engineering and Technology. The group included three ME students, one ECEn, one ChE, one MET, and one CE student. Over ten different conferences operate as part of the IDETC, with attendance at approximately 1300.
