Dr. Brent Showalter is currently the Acting Assistant Director for the Division of Spinal Devices at the FDA. This division regulates devices such as pedicle screws, cages, and total disc replacements. Prior to joining the FDA, Dr. Showalter studied intervertebral disc mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania and received a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Brigham Young University. Prof. Darryl Butt is Dean of the College of Mines and Earth Sciences and Director of the DOE BES Energy Frontier Research Center, MUSE at the University of Utah. The new Associate Dean of the College of Engineering will be Dr. Tim McLain.
Dr. McLain joined the BYU Mechanical Engineering faculty in 1995. He served as ME Dept Chair 2007-2013 and director of the Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) the past seven years.

Dr. Dale Tree has been appointed as the new department chair for Mechanical Engineering. He will replace Dr. Dan Maynes as department chair, effective July 1, 2019.Dr. Tree has served as associate chair in ME since 2013 and been part of the ME faculty at BYU for the last 25 years.
