Experiential Learning
What is Experiential Learning?
Basically, it is the process of learning through experience, as opposed to just listening to a lecture or doing homework. At BYU, we believe that experiential learning is critical to helping you become a qualified and influential engineer. That is why we want you to find and participate in any number of experiential learning opportunities.
What kinds of opportunities are available?
- Each faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering department needs research help in their labs. We strongly encourage students to identify a few professors whose research is interesting, and reach out to see how you can get involved. A volunteer opportunity could turn into credit, and even a paid assistantship.
- There are multiple student organizations you can get involved with - everything from building rockets and robots to humanitarian service. Check out our Clubs and Associations page for information on these activities.
- The university has wonderful Study Abroad opportunities, and some of them are engineering-specific and can be used as a Technical Elective.
Why does experiential learning matter?
When the time comes for you to graduate (and it will), whether you are planning to go straight into the workforce or continue on in a graduate program, these kinds of activities are what will set you apart from the other applicants and make you more attractive to potential employers. The experience, leadership, and training you receive are invaluable as you begin your career.
