Feb.1994 - Dec.1995 Science and Technology Agency Fellow, Awarded by the Research Development Corporation of Japan, Assigned to the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Developed imaging algorithms for optical computed tomography and developed methods for determining the optical properties of biological tissues from reflectance measurements.

Apr.1991 - Mar.1993 Research Associate, Argonne National Laboratory, Engineering Physics Division. Refined a technique for determining the optical properties and particle size distribution of aerosol particles from light scattering measurements. Applied the technique to absolute scattering measurements.
Jun. 1990 - Apr. 1991 Graduate Research Assistant, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Developed a technique to invert light scattering measurements and obtain the particle size distribution function and optical properties of aerosol particles produced by combustion systems.
Aug.1988 - Jun.1990 Graduate Research Assistant, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Measured the radiation emitted by the aluminum - water reaction in the 300 to 800 nm spectral region.
May 1988 - Aug.1988 Research Assistant, Applied Research Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin, Nonlinear Acoustics Division. Built a parabolic acoustic reflector and mapped the pressure field along the axis and near the focus.
May 1986 - Jun.1986 Summer Intern, Texas Instruments Austin Site, Quality Assurance Division. Developed an automated procedure for preparing samples used to determine the effects of thermal stress on printed circuit boards.
May 1985 - Aug.1985 Summer Intern, Texas Instruments Austin Site, Quality Assurance Division. Subjected samples from printed circuit boards to thermal cycles and catalogued the type and frequency of defects caused by thermal stress.

Research Interests

Professor Jones is involved in research projects related to air quality monitoring, dynamic control of radiative surface properties, power harvesting, waste heat recovery, clean burning biomass cookstoves, reduced order modeling and analysis, the characterization of thermal fabrics for personal protective equipment, radio-frequency ablation of cardiac tissue and optical fiber thermometry.

Teaching Interests

Professor Jones teaches heat transfer and thermodynamics courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
